DIY Play Dough: It’s Easier Than It Looks!

My restless daughter is constantly looking for ways to keep busy. When she’s not practicing backbends on her glitter covered yoga mat or building future masterpieces out of Legos, she’s dipping her hands in play dough and churning out some rather impressive pieces of artwork.

I wish to applaud her creativity and also to join in on the fun, so when I set out to take on my own little project… I decided to try and make my own play dough. Here’s what I’ve learned from the process.

Firstly, Making Play Dough At Home Is Easier To Do Than I Expected

Homemade play dough is an environmentally friendly, cost-effective alternative to purchasing this product in the store.

Making it at home also helps to instill a sense of completion and creativity in your little one if you decide to let him or her in on the process. What it means is that their craft is entirely handmade from start to finish.

This beginner level DIY can be completed in less than fifteen minutes and the ingredients you’ll be using yield a nice size batch of the stuff, resulting in endless hours of future crafting. Should you wish to step up the level of fun a notch, simply choose a new color and repeat the instructions as many times as you wish.

Also, Homemade Play Dough Smells Amazing

Here’s a fun little trick that makes homemaking worthwhile—adding a dash of your favorite essential oil for aroma purposes. The below listed ingredients are everything you’ll need to yield a visually and aromatically enticing first batch:

  • 10 drop of your favorite essential oil
  • Food coloring (the color you’d like your play dough to be)
  • One and a half cups of water (boiling)
  • Two cups of all purpose flour
  • Two tablespoons of cream of tartar and the same measurement of vegetable oil
  • Half a cup of salt

Preparation

Be certain you have plenty of space, a nice clean area to work with, a large bowl and a mixing spoon before you get started. Bonus Tip: If your child is participating, you might want to let them wear a smock. This will add to the artistic vibe and aid in reducing stains caused by the food coloring.
